How Investors Can Access Anthropic Before Its IPO (From Weiss Ratings)

IonQ Inc. (NYSE: IONQ) has a long list of commercial applications that it is chasing, including in pharmaceuticals, artificial intelligence, finance, logistics, and more.

Its success in these pursuits is confirmed by its emerging dominance in the quantum industry, solidified after the latest round of earnings reports.

At the same time, the company's growing list of partnerships, government awards and contracts, and acquisitions also points to a less-obvious area in which IonQ may be seeking market leadership: defense and national security.

IonQ's move toward becoming a national security business is not official, but a combination of recent announcements certainly paints a picture of the firm as one positioning itself to be a defense tech supplier spanning not only quantum computing but sensing, networking, communications, and other technologies.

Government Agencies as Critical Customers

In recent years, IonQ has grown the share of its business that is in tandem with the U.S. government. This summer, the company received a $28-million contract extension through the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). This contract provides for 125 specialized atomic clocks to be used for critical positioning, navigation, and timing applications. On top of this, IonQ's announcement of a major investment to expand manufacturing capacity to support the delivery of these clocks suggests it may continue to pursue this technological path even after the DARPA contract.

Acquisitions Point to Space Asset Accumulation

Investors can often tell a lot about a company's plans and intentions by looking at its acquisitions, and a glance at IonQ's recent purchases suggests it is moving to align with government missions in space. Most notably, the firm's acquisition of Capella Space, a satellite maker and intelligence firm, brings IonQ directly into contact with the National Reconnaissance Office's (NRO) Radar Commercial Augmentation program, providing imagery and data to support various national security efforts.

IonQ's investment in Capella is particularly unusual because the latter firm's operations may seem to be quite removed from quantum computing. However, radar satellites and the data they may generate could be prime targets for analysis using quantum systems. For now, it may be difficult for investors to see exactly how IonQ plans to integrate Capella's business into its own—this adds to both the mystique surrounding the quantum leader and the speculative nature of an investment in IonQ.

Sandia Partnership Is Another Key Piece

Also in August 2026, IonQ released a memorandum of understanding with Sandia National Laboratories, according to which it will assist with mission-relevant government use cases. Sandia lies at the core of the United States' nuclear security efforts and plays a pivotal role in supporting missile defense and advanced sensing capabilities. IonQ may very well offer its quantum tech to help with threat modeling, analysis of interceptors, missile testing, and defense systems engineering, potentially opening up several new areas for possible government customers to secure contracts.

What Does It Mean for Investors?

All of the above developments point to IonQ's evident efforts to grow beyond being a standalone quantum tech firm. Moving toward defense may also be a strategic repositioning for the company, given that defense spending often follows long procurement cycles, supporting contracts with significant, multi-year budgets that would provide crucial stability for IonQ's fast-growing revenue.

To be sure, it seems far too soon to classify IonQ as a defense company. First, quantum technology is still very much in development, and despite IonQ's recent commercial success, there remains a major uphill battle to demonstrating that the tools are ready for broader adoption. In the meantime, though, products like atomic clocks, quantum sensors, and radar intelligence offerings may generate revenue for IonQ long before universal quantum computing arrives.

The question for investors becomes whether IonQ will be able to remain at the forefront of quantum technology as it diverts its capital and efforts toward these other projects. At its core, it remains a commercial quantum computing company—and its background as such has earned it acclaim from analysts, who rate it a Buy by nearly a two-to-one margin. At the same time, investors may have a hard time determining whether the company's massive upside potential (nearly 85%, based on a consensus price target just under $70) is due to speculation about its core quantum business, about its recent defense-related announcements, or potentially both. This is another reason why IonQ remains a speculative bet even for those convinced of the revolutionary potential of quantum technology more broadly.
