Most people, if asked who invented the video game, would say Atari. They would be wrong by about fifteen years. The man who actually invented the home video game console was a German-American engineer named Ralph Baer, who built the first working prototype in 1967 in a workshop at Sanders Associates in Nashua, New Hampshire — a defense contractor building military electronics, not a gaming company. Baer called his prototype the "Brown Box" because it was covered in brown leatherette tape, and he spent years trying to convince television manufacturers that people would pay to play games on their television sets. He eventually licensed his invention to Magnavox, which released it in 1972 as the Odyssey. Atari released Pong later that same year. Baer holds the patent. Atari got the mythology.
