The cabin had cost him $28.12 to construct and measured ten feet by fifteen feet. He grew his own food, kept meticulous accounts of his expenses, and spent two years, two months, and two days there before moving back to his family home in Concord, which was less than two miles away. His mother had been bringing him pies throughout the experiment. Thoreau's time at Walden was less radically isolated than its mythology suggests, and he was the first to acknowledge this.
