In 2008, researchers at the University of British Columbia gave participants either $5 or $20 and instructed half of them to spend it on themselves and the other half to spend it on someone else or donate it to charity. At the end of the day, the participants who had spent money on others reported significantly higher levels of happiness than those who had spent it on themselves — regardless of whether they had $5 or $20 to give. The effect held across income levels, across different cultural contexts when the study was replicated internationally, and across the specific form of the giving: whether people bought a gift, paid for a stranger's coffee, or made a charitable donation, spending money prosocially produced more wellbeing than spending it on themselves.
