National Daiquiri Day

In the summer of 1898, an American mining engineer named Jennings Cox found himself in the village of Daiquirí near Santiago de Cuba, responsible for a group of workers who were suffering in the brutal Caribbean heat and running dangerously low on gin. Cox had rum, limes, and sugar — the staple provisions of the Cuban countryside — and the improvised drink he mixed to keep his crew functional in the heat was, by all accounts, immediately excellent. He named it after the beach where they were working and wrote the recipe down. The daiquiri was born not in a Havana cocktail bar but in a mining camp, by an engineer who needed to keep his people cool and was out of something better.

National Daiquiri Day on July 19th celebrates a cocktail that traveled from that Cuban mining camp to the bar at Havana's Floridita — where Ernest Hemingway drank double frozen versions without sugar — to the Kennedy White House, to the blended-fruit disaster of the 1980s, and back again to its three-ingredient original form courtesy of the craft cocktail revival.
