Mauricio Pochettino coaches Team USA, but he was born in which South American country? |

| THE BREAKDOWN |
Red, White, and Blue Overcome Red Card for 2-0 Victory |
What Happened: The United States men’s national team pulled off a signature win in the World Cup round of 32 yesterday, sparking confidence that this team has more left to accomplish on home soil. |
Why You Care: To be clear, and a bit of a downer right off the rip, USA was supposed to win yesterday. Per FIFA's official rankings, the US fields the 15th best men's team in the world. Bosnia and Herzegovina? We're talking 61st, behind powerhouses such as Mali, Saudi Arabia, and Uzbekistan. This game went chalk.
Ok, negatives aside, here is why you should be excited by this win. The 2-0 win over BIH marked the first time America defeated a European opponent since December of 2021! That opponent was…also BIH. Still, it counts.
There was adversity to overcome last night though. Folarin Balogun, who scored against Paraguay twice, found the back of the net again to give his country a 1-0 lead right before halftime. But on the other side of the break, Balogun saw a red card for a challenge on Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic that saw the American's cleat rake his opponent's leg. The VAR-assisted ejection was harsh; potentially losing Balogun for the next round via suspension makes it sting exponentially more.
The Americans didn’t just weather the storm, however. They stayed aggressive, hunting and eventually finding the goal that put the game away for good on a Malik Tillman free kick in the 82nd minute. There was no bus parking from Mauricio Pochettino’s side, an encouraging attitude.
The win marks just the second time the US has ever won a game in the knockout stage of a World Cup, and now sets up a meeting with Belgium, the same nation that ended the US's 2016 World Cup in the round of 16.
Belgium is a team full of stars, and if resumes alone mattered, the United States would have little chance. But that’s not the case, and Belgium, contrary to its level of talent, has frequently underachieved in international play. To get to the round of 16, the Belgians had to overcome a 2-0 hole against Senegal, scoring in the 86th and 89th minutes to draw even before netting a winner at 120'+5. Fans of Belgium will embrace the “never say die” attitude; American supporters will see a team not playing to its capabilities get lucky once and say that won’t happen again. |

The other shoe that will drop and explain this Jaylen Brown trade from the Boston Celtics’ perspective.
Yesterday, the C's pulled the trigger on a deal that will send Brown to Philadelphia in exchange for Paul George and some significant draft capital, including two first rounders. The picks come into play down the road (2028 and 2031) with protections on them; plus, who knows where they'll land.
Why would Boston feel so desperate to get rid of Brown? If they were able to center a trade package around him to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo, that would make sense. But swapping Brown for George, an older, more injury-prone, lesser player? With a roster led by Jayson Tatum, the Celtics should be trying to compete for a title every season. This move screams taking a step back.
So what gives? According to Shams, Brown never asked out of Boston, although he wasn't very subtle about expressing some unhappiness. Even so, is this really the best trade Brad Stevens could execute? Because it sure feels like the team would've been better off spending the offseason kissing Brown's ass and apologizing for the trade chatter while vowing to make it work with him, as opposed to downgrading to Paul George with some lottery tickets tacked onto him. Something tells me we don't quite have all the info on this story quite yet… |
