World UFO Day

In late June of 1947, something crashed in the desert scrubland outside Roswell, New Mexico. Whatever it was scattered debris across a wide field on a ranch managed by a man named W.W. "Mac" Brazel, who reported the material to the local sheriff, who passed the report to Roswell Army Air Field. On July 8th, the public information officer at Roswell issued a press release stating that the Army had recovered a "flying disc." The story ran on the front pages of newspapers across the country for approximately one day before the Army issued a correction: it was a weather balloon. Case closed. Except, of course, it wasn't. The Roswell incident became the foundational text of American UFO culture, the event against which every subsequent sighting, coverup allegation, and extraterrestrial theory has been measured, and its reverberations are still being felt in congressional hearing rooms in the 2020s.

World UFO Day on July 2nd commemorates the estimated date of that crash and invites people everywhere to look up, think seriously about the question of what else might be out there, and engage with one of the most genuinely interesting — and genuinely unresolved — questions in modern science and national security. The conversation has changed considerably since 1947. The government has stopped calling them weather balloons. They're called UAPs now. Which doesn't mean we know what they are.
