Independence Day

On July 2, 1776, the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution declaring the thirteen American colonies independent from Great Britain. John Adams, who had spent months pushing the resolution toward passage, wrote to his wife Abigail that night in a state of barely contained exhilaration. "The second day of July 1776," he predicted, "will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival." He was off by two days. Congress spent July 3rd and most of July 4th debating and editing the Declaration of Independence — the document explaining and justifying the vote already taken — and approved the final text on the afternoon of July 4th. That date went on the document. That date became the holiday. Adams spent the rest of his life mildly baffled by this.

Independence Day is America's founding holiday, the anniversary of the document that articulated the principles the country was built to embody, the occasion for fireworks and cookouts and parades and the particular feeling of a summer Thursday when the whole country is doing the same thing at once. It is a holiday that rewards knowing its history — not because the history is simpler than the mythology, but because it is considerably more interesting.
