IS AMERICA GIVING UP ON WORK?

Last month, 720,000 Americans stopped looking for work entirely. The labor force participation rate fell to 61.5% — the lowest reading in 50 years outside of COVID. The unemployment rate technically went down, but only because people who stop looking aren't counted as unemployed anymore. The real number is worse than the headline.

Who's leaving: burned-out workers in their prime earning years, women pushed out by return-to-office mandates and $4,000/month daycare, new graduates whose entry-level jobs were erased by AI, and older workers whose bodies gave out before their savings did. The class of 2026 is facing one of the worst job markets in a decade. Some Americans are leaving the country entirely — the share working abroad has more than doubled since 2021.
