Why You Care: This felt inevitable, and like the best path forward for Sorsby.
For those not in the loop here, Sorsby has played quarterback for four collegiate seasons β two at Indiana and two at Cincinnati. A highly coveted transfer portal target, Sorsby announced his intention to play for the Red Raiders of Texas Tech in 2026 back in January.
That plan was derailed when reports began to emerge detailing Sorsbyβs prolific betting activities. And we mean prolific β Sorsby is believed to have placed bets worth around $90K over his four years as a student-athlete. While he bet on professional sports, easily the reddest flag of this saga concerns Sorsby betting on Indiana football games while he was a member of the team. He also bet on IU basketball games, but if Sorsby had just stayed away from college football bets, he probably wouldβve been fine.
Once Sorsbyβs betting activity was discovered, the NCAA ruled him ineligible. From there, a flurry of appeals and injunctions flew. The QB was granted a temporary respite by a Texas judge that paved the way for him to play for Texas Tech in 2026 after all, but legal maneuvers from the Big 12 and NCAA came not long after to get that decision reversed. Big 12 schools threatened to boycott TTU, other major programs declared the offending school persona non grata, and seemingly no one was happy to see Sorsby back on the college football radar.
And so, instead of fighting for his place in an environment that sure seems hostile to his mere presence, Sorsby will try to make the leap to the NFL instead. It wonβt be smooth. The NFL hasnβt held a supplemental draft since 2023, since it only happens when prospects who meet eligibility criteria exist. No player has been selected in a supplemental draft since 2019, when the Arizona Cardinals used the equivalent of a fifth-round pick on safety Jalen Thompson. The last quarterback taken was Terrelle Pryor out of Ohio State in 2011 as a third-rounder; if you remember his NFL career, you know he didnβt last at QB.
Talent evaluators think more highly of Sorsby, pegging him as a potential first-round pick if he had declared for the 2026 draft, and capable of doing the same in the 2027 draft. With plenty of NFL teams still looking for their quarterback of the future, Sorsby should get a chance to prove himself to the league. But this saga has taken a couple of unexpected turns already, and the path Sorsby is being forced to pursue is not a well-trodden one for a reason. |
