The zero-gravity hallway fight in Inception is one of the most technically ambitious action sequences ever filmed — and not a single frame of it was computer generated.
Christopher Nolan wanted the audience to feel the disorientation of dream physics in their bones. So instead of reaching for CGI, he built a 100-foot hotel corridor inside an airship hangar outside London, mounted it on a massive gimbal structure, and made it spin 360 degrees. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, playing Arthur, spent two weeks familiarising himself with every inch of the set before filming began — studying the layout so he could move through it credibly while it rotated around him. The cameras had to be physically bolted to the set itself so they rotated with it, and every light fixture, picture frame, and piece of corridor dressing had to be fully functional at any angle. There were actually two separate rigs: a horizontal rotating corridor for the zero-gravity fight sequences, and a vertical shaft rig for the elevator climbing scenes. The whole sequence took three weeks to film. Gordon-Levitt later described it as carrying on "in the grand tradition of Fred Astaire dancing on the ceiling." Even the crew, who rotated through the set themselves during preparation, said it was a profoundly strange and physically demanding experience.
