Bizarre Fun Fact: A Party Drug Changed Surgery Forever ππ
Thursday, November 6, 2025
In the 1840s, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) was a party drug used for entertainment at traveling shows. People would inhale it and stumble around giggling while crowds watched. At one of these parties, a man named Samuel Cooley got injured while high on laughing gasβand didn't feel any pain. A dentist named Horace Wells was watching and immediately recognized the implications. If laughing gas blocked pain, it could be used during surgery. At the time, surgery was pure tortureβpatients were held down screaming while doctors operated as fast as possible. Wells tested it on himself during a tooth extraction, felt nothing, and began using nitrous oxide on patients. Modern anesthesia was born because someone got hurt at a party and didn't notice. Surgery went from a death sentence to a survivable medical procedureβall because of a party trick gone wrong.
