Bizarre Fun Fact: He Learned to See With Sound ποΈπ

Daniel Kish went blind at 13 months old due to retinal cancer. But by age two, he had taught himself to ""see"" using echolocationβthe same technique bats and dolphins use. He makes clicking sounds with his tongue and listens to how those sounds bounce off objects around him. His brain learned to interpret the echoes so precisely that he can ride a bicycle through traffic, hike mountain trails alone, and navigate unfamiliar buildings without assistance. Brain scans show that when he echolocates, his visual cortex lights upβthe part of the brain that processes sight in sighted people. He's literally seeing with sound. Kish now teaches other blind people his technique through his organization. He's proven that the human brain is far more adaptable than scientists believed. He's climbed trees, played basketball, and lived independently using nothing but tongue clicks and echoes. His brain rewired itself to turn sound into visual information.
