In August 1978, a songwriter named Rupert Holmes placed a personal ad in a newspaper. It read: "If you like piña coladas, and getting caught in the rain." It was not a real personal ad — it was a lyric from a song he was writing — but the resulting record, "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)," spent three weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, became the last number-one song of the 1970s, and introduced the piña colada to roughly half the population of the United States by name and concept simultaneously. The song was about a bored man who answers a personal ad and discovers his respondent is his own partner, which is either a charming story about rediscovering each other or a moderately alarming story about mutual dissatisfaction. The drink, regardless, was the winner. By 1979, every bar in America knew what a piña colada was. The actual bartenders of Puerto Rico, who had been making the drink for decades, watched this happen with some mixture of pride and exasperation.
