| SHOULD TROUBLED TEEN PROGRAMS EXIST? |
Asheville Academy was a therapeutic boarding school for girls in North Carolina. Parents paid between $60,000 and $100,000 a year to send their daughters there for mental health treatment. In May 2025, a 13-year-old died by suicide. Two days after the state suspended admissions, a 12-year-old died by suicide. The school surrendered its license and closed. It wasn't the first time. The same management company previously ran Trails Carolina, a wilderness program that was shut down after a 12-year-old boy died 24 hours after his admission. The "troubled teen industry" — a loose network of wilderness programs, therapeutic boarding schools, and boot camps — has operated largely without federal oversight for decades. Some parents say it saved their child's life. Many survivors say it destroyed theirs. The industry exists because parents run out of options. The question is whether these programs are one of those options or the thing that closes them off entirely. |

| POSITION A: Shut Them Down |
| An industry that rebrands after children die, operates without federal oversight, and charges desperate parents six figures to put their kids in places where they face abuse and isolation is exploitation. |
| POSITION B: Regulate, Don't Abolish |
| Some families have children in genuine crisis — suicidal, actively using, completely unreachable at home — and they need residential options that exist outside of a hospital. The problem is the lack of standards, oversight, and accountability that lets bad actors operate unchecked. Fix the system. Don't eliminate the last option some families have. |
