Why You Care: Ultimately Pavia didnβt hear his name called because of his on-field concerns. After six seasons of college ball, Pavia is already 24 years of age; C.J. Stroud and Caleb Williams, for example, are both 24 years old with multiple NFL seasons under their belts. Height is also an issue for the diminutive Pavia β Vanderbilt listed him as 6β0, but Senior Bowl measurements put him under 5β10. NFL teams want quarterbacks who can see over an offensive line, and Pavia may struggle in that regard. He also isnβt blessed with an above-average arm, or really any standout trait. The production in college was solid, but translating that to the NFL isnβt a given.
Itβs also true that Paviaβs maturity worries plenty of teams in the league. Posting on Instagram β"FβALL THE VOTERSβ after coming in second place in the Heisman Trophy voting to Fernando Mendoza probably didnβt endear him to NFL front offices. Neither did posting "Fβββ Indiana" later that same night in a club in New York City, doubling down on the disrespect towards Mendoza, who by contrast comes off in media appearances like an aw shucks cartoon character.
There was also the weird wrinkle of whether Pavia had hired an agent or not, after making comments that indicated he didnβt want anyone taking β5-10%β of the money earned on an NFL contract. Well, no worries there Diego β no one offered you a deal yet, and NFL agents can only take up to a 3% fee for their services, not 10%. Paperwork indicates that Pavia indeed is repped by an agent, albeit one more known for his work in MMA. For a guy perceived as not mature enough, the agent confusion only muddies the waters.
The Baltimore Ravens have thrown Pavia a lifeline, inviting him to their rookie minicamp that begins on Friday. Heβll be joined by former UConn QB Joe Fagnano, so itβs not as if Pavia is a shoo-in for reps in his bid to make the team or impress Baltimoreβs decision-makers. The Ravens also are expected to extend Lamar Jackson on another monster deal and recently re-upped Jacksonβs frequent backup Tyler Huntley to a two-year contract. Pavia making his mark on the NFL seems unlikely, whether you doubt his on-field talent or whatβs between his ears. |
