Idaho State Police Struggle to Retain Troopers Amid Low WagesApril 3, 2026

Troopers with the Idaho State Police are leaving for similar, better-paying jobs in Washington. The Washington State Patrol and Spokane Police Department are among the agencies Idaho troopers have joined in the past few years because the jobs offer the highest law enforcement wages. Idaho State Police Director Col. Bill Gardiner has been working to find a fix, as the vacancies are putting the agency at a disadvantage. Gardiner has proposed a $18 million plan to place trooper wages around $45 an hour, but a bill to raise the annual vehicle registration fee to $8 to generate funding stalled in the state legislature.
