MURDER CHARGES โ€” COUPLE ARRESTED AFTER TODDLER STARVED TO DEATH IN SQUALOR

He was two years old, weighed 15 pounds, and had been eating the walls of his room to survive. On March 31, police arrived at a Tell City, Indiana home to find him dead on the floor.

Erik Reichard was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators determined he had been dead for several hours by the time 911 was called โ€” and that the couple had last seen him alive more than 14 hours earlier.

What police found inside was devastating. Children's rooms were covered in feces, drywall debris, and soiled diapers, with insects throughout. One child's bedroom doorknob had been reversed so the adults could lock them inside. The couple's own bedroom was clean and uncluttered. An autopsy confirmed Erik had ingested material consistent with diapers, drywall, and paint chips. Cause of death: severe malnutrition and dehydration due to neglect.

Trevor Reichard-Hayes, 39, and Katherine Carter, 31, were arrested April 3 and charged with murder, neglect of a dependent resulting in death, and neglect of a dependent. Both are held in the Perry County Detention Center. Carter appears in court May 14; Reichard-Hayes on May 28.
