That Eerie Mist Has a Very Good Explanation

Step outside on a late March or April morning and you may find the world has disappeared overnight. Trees at the end of your street are gone, headlights float through gray-white haze, the air feels damp and cool. By 10 a.m., it's all burned off and the day is clear and bright—as if the fog was never there. Spring fog is one of the season's most consistent phenomena, dense enough to cause serious travel hazards, then vanishing so completely people forget about it until the next morning.

Why Spring Is the Foggiest Season

Fog forms when air cools to its dew point—the temperature at which air becomes saturated with water vapor and excess vapor condenses into tiny liquid droplets. Spring is the sweet spot: air is warm enough to carry substantial moisture (dew points regularly climb into the 40s and 50s), but nights still cool significantly, sometimes by 20°F or more between afternoon highs and early-morning lows. This large temperature swing applied to moisture-rich spring air creates perfect conditions for radiation fog.

Two types of spring fog operate through different mechanisms:

Radiation fog (most common): After sunset on calm, clear spring nights, ground radiates absorbed heat back to space. As ground cools, it chills air immediately above. Spring air carries much more moisture than winter air, meaning the dew point is higher—air doesn't have to cool as much before condensation begins and fog forms
Advection fog (near water): Forms when warm, moist spring air moves over surfaces still cold from winter—lakes, coastal areas, fields with recent snowmelt. The Great Lakes in February were 34°F and might still be only 42°F in late March, cold enough to chill warm air into fog
Why not winter?: Winter is colder but much drier. Cold air holds little water vapor, so winter dew points are low. There aren't enough water droplets available to create dense, visible fog despite easy cooling to the dew point
Why it burns off: As morning sun heats the ground, surface warms and transfers heat to air above. Air temperature rises above dew point, and tiny water droplets evaporate back into invisible vapor—fog doesn't go somewhere, it simply ceases to exist as liquid water

Fog Safety and Surprising Benefits

Dense fog is a genuine hazard—visibility below a quarter mile significantly increases accident risk. When Dense Fog Advisories are issued, slow down, increase following distance, and use low-beam headlights (high beams reflect off fog and reduce visibility further). But fog also delivers moisture: fog drip—droplets collecting on leaves and surfaces then dripping to ground—provides meaningful water to gardens and ecosystems, especially where spring rainfall is limited.

Spring fog forms through nothing more than a few degrees of temperature change and moisture in the air, disappearing just as quietly. That it happens most often in spring, the season already defined by transformation, feels entirely appropriate.
