The Season That Tricks You Into Overdoing It

The first genuinely warm weekend of spring has a way of turning reasonable people into overachievers. After months of cold, gray weather and reduced activity, a 65°F Saturday feels like a gift that must be fully used. People who haven't jogged since October head out for five-mile runs. Weekend warriors spend eight hours doing yard work. By Sunday evening, many are sore, sunburned, dehydrated, or nursing an injury they didn't see coming. The weather felt so perfect—how did things go sideways?

Your Body Hasn't Caught Up to the Calendar

After months of reduced outdoor activity and cold-weather physiology, your cardiovascular fitness, muscle conditioning, and heat tolerance are all lower than last fall. Heat acclimatization—where your body adapts to exercise in warm conditions—takes 10-14 days of regular activity to develop. On the first warm days of spring, you have essentially zero heat acclimatization. A temperature that feels comfortable (60-65°F in direct sunlight) can push you into heat stress faster than the same temperature in July when you're adapted.

Spring's deceptive health risks require specific strategies:

  • Hydrate intentionally: Cold weather suppresses thirst response, and many people spend months mildly dehydrated. Spring activity causes sweating you haven't experienced in months, but breezes keep you comfortable enough that you don't reach for water as often as needed
  • Respect UV intensity: Spring sun at the equinox delivers UV comparable to summer despite mild air temperatures. A 55°F partly cloudy late-March day can cause significant sunburn in under an hour on winter-pale skin
  • Follow the 10% rule: Increase weekly exercise volume by no more than 10% per week. Muscles, tendons, and joints need gradual adaptation—connective tissue adapts more slowly than cardiovascular fitness, causing the spike in plantar fasciitis and tendinopathy cases after the first warm weekend
  • Time workouts around pollen: Pollen counts peak 5-10 a.m., drop in afternoon, and are lowest after rain. Exercise increases breathing rate, exposing airways to more pollen per minute than light activity

Prepare for Evening Temperature Drops

A 65°F afternoon can become 42°F within a few hours after sunset as warm air retreats. People heading out for evening activities dressed for afternoon temperatures often find themselves dangerously underdressed heading home. Layer accordingly and bring more than you think you need for outdoor activities extending into evening hours during March and April.

Getting outside after a long winter is genuinely good for physical and mental health. The goal is meeting the season with accurate expectations—your body needs a few weeks to catch up, spring sun is more powerful than it feels, and the first warm days are best treated as a starting point rather than a finish line.
