Sincerely, The Security Team Who will advance to the field of 64? | | | THE BREAKDOWN | March Madness Begins With First Four Matchups | | What Happened: We have March Madness action!
Whether you love the First Four, or stand firm that the real tournament doesn't start until Thursday afternoon, we have games tonight that matter. Let's get the field of 68 down to 66. | | Why You Care: In the night's first matchup, we are treated to a no. 16 vs. no. 16 matchup, as the Howard Bison take on the Retrievers of UMBC. If UMBC is ringing a bell, that's because they've made some noise as a no. 16 seed before, knocking off no. 1 Virginia in 2018, the first team to ever pull that off.
UMBC takes care of the ball and gets to the rim with great efficiency, which will make life tough for Howard. The Bison work hard to force turnovers and turn them into quick points. But if UMBC's guards can protect the rock, the Howard offense will be forced to operate more from the half-court, which is not a strength. I'm not sure the Retrievers can topple another giant in the tournament's first round, but they should get the chance.
In the second game, Texas faces off against NC State. The Longhorns are well acquainted with having to fight to make the field of 64 β they played a First Four game last year as well, losing to Xavier. There isn't much daylight between these two teams in terms of KenPom rankings, as NC State rates as the country's 34th-best team, three spots ahead of Texas.
Neither team enters tonight's game in the best form, as both have dropped five of their last six contests. In a game that should see plenty of scoring, I'd lean Texas in this spot. NC State relies more on the 3-pointer to score, a risky identity in tournament play. Meanwhile, Texas should be able to exploit the Wolfpack's weak opponent two-point field goal percentage allowed, which ranks 226th in the nation. Texas also comes from the SEC, the conference with the most teams in the tournament, illustrating the level of competition it faced in the regular season. | | TODAY's LINEUP | Keep An Eye On... | | The World Baseball Classic final tonight, featuring USA vs. Venezuela, as well as Aaron Judge's questionable comments about the tournament.
The game should be a fun one, especially for New York Mets fans, as hyped prospect Nolan McLean gets the ball for the red, white, and blue. McLean made eight starts last season and quickly became the Mets' most dependable starter. ESPN already tabbed him as a top-100 player in the game despite his limited experience, and tonight, fans will get to see how the fireballer fares in a pressure spot.
Also, does anyone believe Aaron Judge? After defeating the Dominican Republic, the Yankees slugger proclaimed the WBC is "bigger and better than the World Series." Tell that to Yankees fans, Aaron.
The WBC is a fun tournament, and the stakes are always raised when patriotism comes into play. But it's existed since 2006. The World Series dates back to 1903. No one in baseball would credibly claim the WBC is a bigger deal, and if I were a Pinstripes fan, I'd be a little concerned with Judge'sβ¦judgement. | If you had to bet on a no.1 seed to win it all, which are you choosing? | | | | |
