Proposed Legislation in Idaho Targets Assistance to Undocumented ImmigrantsMarch 4, 2026
The Idaho House Committee is considering a proposed legislation, House Bill 764, that would make it a crime to provide shelter, transportation, financial support or legal assistance to anyone in the United States without proper documentation. The bill has faced opposition from faith leaders, non-profits, volunteers and local law enforcement, who argue that it unfairly targets those committed to helping marginalized groups. The bill's sponsor, Representative Dale Hawkins, has clarified that the bill would not require churches or charities to check immigration status, but many still feel that it undermines humanitarian efforts in Idaho. The bill was ultimately held in committee by a 9-7 vote.
