The mantis shrimp looks tiny and harmless, but it possesses one of the most powerful weapons in the entire animal kingdom. Its punch is so fast and so powerful that it literally boils the water around its fist and creates flashes of light.The mantis shrimp can strike at speeds of 50 mph - about the same as a .22 caliber bullet. The acceleration is so extreme (10,400 g-force) that it creates cavitation bubbles in the water, which collapse and produce temperatures nearly as hot as the surface of the sun for a split second. This also generates a shockwave and a flash of light called sonoluminescence.Even if the mantis shrimp misses its target, the shockwave from the collapsing bubble alone is enough to stun or kill its prey. Aquarium workers have to keep them in special reinforced tanks because they've been known to punch through regular glass.
