Jingle Bells is possibly the most famous Christmas song ever written. Except it has absolutely nothing to do with Christmas. Not one single lyric mentions the holiday, Santa, snow on Christmas day, or anything remotely festive. The song was written in 1857 by James Lord Pierpont for Thanksgiving. Specifically, it was about Thanksgiving sleigh races in Medford, Massachusettsβa popular tradition where young people would race horse-drawn sleighs through town. The original title was "One Horse Open Sleigh," and it was performed at a Thanksgiving church service. The whole song is literally just describing a sleigh race: dashing through snow, laughing all the way, bells on the horse's harness jingling. So how did it become a Christmas anthem? Nobody really knows. Decades after it was written, people just started singing it at Christmas because it mentioned snow and sleighs. It was a complete accident of association. Now it's so linked to Christmas that most people don't even realize it never was. We've been singing a Thanksgiving racing song at Christmas for over a century, and nobody questioned it!
