Bizarre Fun Fact: Carrots Weren't Always Orange π₯π
Friday, November 14, 2025
For thousands of years, carrots were purple, white, yellow, and redβbut never orange. Orange carrots didn't exist in nature. They were genetically engineered by Dutch farmers in the 1600s as a tribute to William of Orange, the leader of the Dutch independence movement. The Dutch selectively bred yellow and red carrots together for generations until they created a stable orange variety. The new orange carrots were sweeter and less bitter than the original purple ones, so they became wildly popular and spread across Europe. Purple carrots still exist but are rare. The orange ones completely took over because they tasted better and had symbolic political meaning. Every orange carrot you've ever eaten is a Dutch political statement from 400 years ago.
